On Sunday Morning (in the east coast of USA) but afternoon Milan, Italy time, the United States Men’s Hockey team took home their first Olympic Gold since 1980 defeating Canada in overtime 2 to 1!
Massachusetts native and member of the Minnesota Wild NHL team, Matt Boldy gave the USA a 1-0 lead in the 1st period with a goal at 6 minutes left to go. Cale Makar of Canada and the Colorado Avalanche responded with a game-tying goal in the 2nd period just a minute and 44 seconds into the period. After tremendous goaltending from both sides the game would remain tied forcing a sudden-death 3 on 3 overtime.
In overtime, Florida native and member of the New Jersey Devils, Jack Hughes netted the game-winning Goal a minute and 41 seconds into overtime! Canada had 42 shots on net compared to just 28 for the United States, but the incredible goaltending by Michigan native and Winnipeg Jet Goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck ultimately was a difference-maker in the USA win as Hellebuyck made 41 stops and allowed just one goal!
This is the first time in Winter Olympic Games history that both the United States Men’s & Women’s team have both won Gold in the same games and both teams did it versus Canada. Hockey may be Canada’s national sport, but I think it’s safe to say Hockey is now an American sport! 🙂
During their celebration the USA team gave a touching tribute to former teammate & Hockey brother Johnny Gaudreau who was tragically struck while biking by a drunk driver in 2024.
The 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics was the most successful winter Olympics appearance for the United States in history! USA captured 12 Gold Medals (most in US history), 12 Silver and 9 Bronze and had 33 overall to finish 2nd to Norway in the overall medal count.
USA! USA! USA! USA! Thank you to the United States athletes who proudly represented our country in the Milano-Cortina Olympics, you made our country proud! God Bless you and God Bless America!!!
